I wore a size 9.5 shoe in the third grade and a 13 by the sixth. I was growing so fast I'd leave school half a day early just to find shoes that fit — at $250 or more a pair, three pairs a year.
I grew up shopping big & tall stores built for men 30 years older than me. Thrift stores had nothing in my size, and the rare find shrank in the first wash. As an adult, it didn't change. The message was always the same: be grateful for what's here, and accept it.
I refused.
I studied pattern making and menswear design at the Academy of Art University, so I knew why big & tall costs so much: it's the fabric. More material, smaller runs, higher prices. New clothes weren't the answer — so I worked backwards.
Big and tall guys — and the partners and families who shop for them — are sitting on gold in their closets. Pieces that fit, with plenty of life left. They just never had a place built for them.
So in 2022 I started Penthouse Thrift: the first marketplace built for big and tall men to buy and sell lightly worn designer clothes and sneakers that actually fit, closet to closet. Every listing is reviewed, and high-value pieces get extra verification.
And you don't have to be big and tall to sell. Bags, luggage, ties, scarves — accessories fit everyone, and there's a big guy who'll put yours to work.
